Researching a commentary, writing an introduction, and creating a translation of the first book of Symmachus's Lettershas been a project that has allowed me to make the friendship of some extraordinarily generous and learned scholars. Michael Roberts has demonstrated repeatedly his gracious-ness and keen insight into the intricacies of Late Latin. It has truly been a joy to work with him on the translations of these letters. His careful questioning of the text and of the commentary has improved this manuscript significantly. I am grateful for his patience and friendship as Symmachus passed back and forth between coasts and computers. We have tried to render these letters into modern English, while maintaining the style of the original text. Th is has been a challenging undertaking, given Symmachus's propensity for archaism, formality, and literariness, but a task not without its rewards.
